7.3.5

Updated: Antorus Tier, 5th May 2018

Welcome to the Fire Mage omega guide going into patch 7.2.5, Legion. This written guide aims to compliment the video guides linked at the top of each section for those with loss of hearing or those who simply prefer a text medium. I plan to keep it updated through-out ToS with any new findings and to include multiple other topics in the future (a list can be found below). If you have any suggestions on specific topics or feedback on the guide, feel free to let me know.

I would like to thank the users Zulandia for the feedback on this guide and Heterodox for the on going work with fire mage sims, both of which made this guide (and the fire mage community as a whole) as good as it is today.

Intro

This is an introduction to the basics of the fire mage and what you really need to know to get started. We'll overview all the things we consider before stepping into a raid such as which races are the best and which enchants to use.

Races

For horde, troll is the best race. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=26297/berserking" adds more GCDs into the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion windows allowing for higher burst potential. On a 3 minute cd, it is worth saving every second http://www.wowhead.com/spell=26297/berserking to line up with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion.

For alliance, dwarf is the best race. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=59224/migh ... e-mountain is obviously quite a boost when a spec is designed around critical striking.

These numbers will vary depending on legendaries/gear you have. For example, if you get multiple http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king procs and http://www.wowhead.com/item=140809/whis ... bonus=3515 procs during http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, the extra haste from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=26297/berserking is going to be far more beneficial than the damage
from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=5227/touch-of-the-grave (undead racial).

For mythic plus content, Blood elf (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=47779/arcane-torrent) is by far the best as the aoe silence is ridiculously strong but has no real use in raiding

If you are not picking Troll or Dwarf to min/max, then it doesn't really matter what race you go, just pick the one you think looks the best.

Artifact Path

The order you want to get your base artifact traits are:

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=221844/wings-of-flame
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194318/cauterizing-blink
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194239/pyr ... c-paranoia
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194224/fire-at-will
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194331/pyretic-incantation
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194313/great-balls-of-fire
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=215796/big-mouth
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=215773/phoenix-reborn
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194234/rei ... -overdrive
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194487/blast-furnace
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194431/aftershocks
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=210182/blue-flame-special
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=227481/scorched-earth
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194315/molten-skin
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=214918/emp ... spellblade

Once you have completed all of your http://www.wowhead.com/item=128820/felomelorn, you will unlock the new traits which were introduced in 7.2. The order you want to get these in are:

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=241124/ins ... tirisgarde
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194224/fire-at-will
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=238055/pre-ignited
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194239/pyr ... c-paranoia
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=238091/war ... he-phoenix
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=238127/strafing-run
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194234/rei ... -overdrive
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194313/great-balls-of-fire
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=210182/blue-flame-special
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194318/cauterizing-blink
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194315/molten-skin
and finally
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=239042/con ... legionfall

Relics

This list is based off single target fights.

The best relics to aim for are http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194239/pyr ... c-paranoia since http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast is our main damage source along side http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite making http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption the 2nd best relic.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=238055/pre-ignited is very close 3rd.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze in 4th.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194224/fire-at-will in 5th.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194234/rei ... -overdrive in 6th
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194313/great-balls-of-fire in 7th, last of the dps relics.
If you get any of these relics at 5ilvls or higher, then you can replace your current relics and see a dps gain.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194318/cauterizing-blink, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=210182/blue-flame-special and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194315/molten-skin
relics require a 10ilvl upgrade over your previous relic to be worthwhile replacing.

Aoe fights increases the value of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=238055/pre-ignited, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=210182/blue-flame-special by a huge margin but it is generally not worth picking relics for AOE situations since there is generally far more ST fights then there are consistent aoe fights. If you are only doing m+ content then these relics may be the ones you wish to go for however you will be sacrificing lots of boss damage. I would personally recommend sticking to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194239/pyr ... c-paranoia and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption.

Talents

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac - Gives you a small chance to reactivate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak when using a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak. Very RNG and also very easy to munch procs. More interactive but not really worth the extra effort required.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration - An extra small dot applied when you fireball a target. Conflag and Ignite also have a chance to flare up dealing 45% spell damage to all nearby enemies. Very good in aoe situations like m+ and also not needed to be managed like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter - When your target is above 90% health, your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast will always critially strike. This talent is better the longer higher the bosses max HP is so scales really well during harder difficulty content and progression while falls behind in m+. Another reason you take this talent is so you can fish for http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king procs and then open your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation with a hardcast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast which is extremely strong. When using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power, you can simply cast the rune and then start the hard cast and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion at the end of the cast which effectively loses some of your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power buff but makes up for it due to the huge damage http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast will hit for.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer - Being able to position while casting is extremely powerful. The only choice in this tier worth considering.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image - Makes 3 copies of your character for 40 seconds. Each mirror casts http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and is affected by all of the hosts stats aside from mastery since they do not contribute to ignite. Haste stacking makes them very
strong as they can get more casts off during their 40 second duration uptime.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power - Increases spell damage by 40% when the buff is active. Since the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is placed on the floor, you are locked to a certain position of the room for the duration however the graphic is a lot smaller than the actual radius of the zone. Scales ALL spell damage including trinkets.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow - Used when you need constant aoe damage through out an entire fight or when you cannot utilize http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power to it's full effectiveness.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury - Very good if you have the http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem and there are burst aoe opportunities. Not really used in single target even if you have http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on - The standard talent for 99% of encounters. An extra charge and cooldown reduction on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast means more potentially opportunities to convert http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up procs into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak. The fire mage bread and butter.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205033/controlled-burn - 20% chance to convert heating up instantly into hotstreak. Similar to pyromaniac, the RNG element can be more of a hindrance then anything else. Never used in any situation.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed - While scorching, gain a burst of movement speed. Great extra mobility and the only talent which directly benefits us in this row.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward may have some niche uses but they are few and far between.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb - Applies a dot to the target which on expiry, explodes for aoe damage and adds the same dot to everything around it which also explodes. The damage increases exponentially the more targets are in close proximity of the original bomb target.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157976/unstable-magic - http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball sometimes does more damage. Incredibly boring talents but the best in the row if there is no aoe in the entire fight.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch - Leaves a patch of fire on the floor at your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike location. Multiple patchs stack and the aoe damage can very quickly become absurdly high. However, if the mobs move out of the patch, all damage is lost. Mostly used in m+ when you do not need to focus a priority target and the packs are not very big, say, 3-4 mobs each.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling - Every time http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast crit, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cd is reduced by 1 second.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm - Fire 6 cinders in an arc towards your target. One of the few spells which you have to directly aim with your character. Excellent in aoe situations due to cinders passing through all mobs in it's path however much harder to use than the other 2.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor - Drop a hard hitting ball of molten rock onto someones head for huge initial damage and a "flame patch" esque floor dot. Very simply to use.

Netherlight Crucible

Each relic we loot can further be enhanced with the Netherlight crucible. Upon slotting a relic into the crucible, we are offered 2 paths which unlock an extra proc based ability or passive stat in the tier 2 slot, and 1 extra relic trait in the tier 3 slot.

Image

Below is a list of each tier 2 ability we can gain in order of highest dps first:

1. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252906/torment-the-weak
2. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=253093/infusion-of-light
3. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=253070/secure-in-the-light
4. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252875/shadowbind
5. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252888/chaotic-darkness
6. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252191/murderous-intent
7. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252799/shocklight
8. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252091/master-of-shadows
9. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252088/light-speed
10. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252922/dark-sorrows

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=253111/lights-embrace and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=252207/refractive-shell provide no dps increase.

It is highly recommend to download the addon https://wow.curseforge.com/projects/crucibleweight which we vastly simplify the selection process. Once installed, import the script below and the addon will automatically display numerical values per slot. Obviously, picking the highest cumulative value of all 3 tiers will result in the highest dps output per relic.

Builds

Instead of labelling all the builds, I want to pick a few talents and discuss why they are picked in specific situations.

Tier 15 Talents
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter is used on 95% of encounters because the amount of crits you get easily make up for the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration damage. The shorter the boss stays above 90% hp, the worse this talent becomes hence why it is incredibly strong on progress fights/at the start of a tier. The effectiveness is also based on your group composition and whether you lust at the start of the fight or not.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is really good on aoe. The conflagration dot applied by fireball does very little damage itself, the real power is in the flareup which occurs when target are affected by ignite, which does a lot of damage over the course of the fight provided the mobs are stacked up the entire time.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac.would only be picked if the time above 90% boss hp is incredibly low. Even then, you have to make sure to not munch too many procs or even http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration could be better.

Tier 45 Talents
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image does a lot of ST damage and 0 aoe damage. However, the reason it has fallen behind RoP and IF compared to in NH is because of they do not contribute to buffing the damage of http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =1497:3561 or are not affected by the T20 set bonuses compared to the T19 (haste proc). Mirrors snapshots the casters stats but does not mimic and on use trinkets which do damage independently. This means procs on trinkets like http://www.wowhead.com/item=140809/whis ... bonus=3515 would also scale the mirrors cast spead while http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =1497:3561 does absolutely nothing for them (since they don't benefit from mastery OR the on use).

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is the highest dps talent on the row currently. Our spec works around burst windows and rune synergizes well with them. BUT, you lose all the benefit the rune provides if you are not standing in it. This means that any fight where you have excessive amounts of movement, RoP simply drops in value since you cannot gain 100% uptime of the buff per cast. This is why you may see other talent choices being used, not because they are better than RoP, but because RoP cannot be utilised to it's fullest extent.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow is a permanent, dynamic damage increase which doesn't need to be managed, is not hindered by movement AND synergizes with both T20 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =1497:3561. Taken when you can't stand in http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power.

Tier 100 Talents
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling. With the introduction of the Antorus raid and subsequent tier 21 set bonuses, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling is considered the go to choice in this tier. Since the 4 set bonus emphasises the burst potential of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, getting more http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion 's in per fight is highly desirable. Combined with a crit heavy build, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion 's cooldown is significantly reduced making a very active play style. Charge counting (getting all your charges of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames 's and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast s back on time for combustion ) is key to this build and should be the main focus outside of combustion windows.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor only see's play when there is an explicit 2 minute dps window (Kin'garoth). If you ever have to sit on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion for long time, consider http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor as a better option.

Stats

There are 5 main stats the Fire mage gets to work with.

Intellect - Our Primary stat and very very rarely valued higher than any other stat. The most recent change to secondary stats (7.1.5) made ilvl much more important and therefore it would be rare to not equip an item of higher ilvl. The higher the ilvl, the more Intellect the item will have (excluding rings and neck pieces).

Critical Strike - What the entire spec is based off. Not only does crit make our spells do more damage, but enables hotstreaks which let us fire off our hardest hitting abilities.

Haste - Let's us cast faster and also affects the cast speed of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image. Also affects the cooldowns of certain abilities, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm

Versatility - Plain and simple, increases the damage of our spells by a %.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite - After casting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, a percentage of the damage is left on the target as a dot for 9 seconds ticking every second. The amount of Mastery we have increases that percentage.

Depending on the content you are doing, your current gear and how many points in your http://www.wowhead.com/item=128820/felomelorn you have, your stat priority is going change. This is why it's always important to sim your own character regularly. Here is one example of stat priorities changing based on gear:

Sim your own character regularly to keep up to date on your own personal stat weights. It takes 2 mins to do it, don't be lazy!

Here's a guide for simming yourself!

Legendaries

Fire mage is heavily based on legendaries, specifically http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king. You will notice huge differences in mages with and without http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king, they are almost mandatory to play the spec competitively. The same could be said for http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem in certain situations but not the same extent as the bracers.

Here is the ranking order for Single Target:

Rings are dependant on your stat weights.

Once you've simmed your character, you can find your stat weights in a box called Scale Factors as you can see here.

I want to be gemming/enchanting Vers as it's the highest scaling stat weight for me and avoiding Crit wherever possible.

Intro
In this video, we'll go over how to correctly execute the fire mage rotation using all of the common builds used in both raiding and m+. The aim of this guide is to teach you why certain builds are used so you can make your own informed decisions in the future.

"So, how exactly do you play fire mage."

Fire relies on landing 2 (non-periodic) critical strikes in a row to gain the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak Buff which in turn enables our hardest hitting abilities to become instant cast and to contribute double the amount of our http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite. To aid us in landing those important crits, our skill set is complimented with passives which increase our crit chance and spells which have 100% crit chance. This is to alleviate some of the older issues fire mages used to run into where it was only possible to play the spec at all at the ends of expansions due to finally being able to get enough crit from gear itself.

Let's have a closer look at what exactly these spells and passives do to help us.

Spells and Passives

Passives

The first passive is http://www.wowhead.com/spell=117216/critical-mass. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=117216/critical-mass increases our crit chance by a base 15% and increases the amount of crit chance we get from all sources by 10%. This means the lowest possible amount of crit strike a fire mage can have is 20% since every spec also has a base 5%. Interestingly, we also have a base 6% mastery. This passive is not something you need to track or care about but is important to know nonetheless.

The second passive we have is http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157642/enh ... otechnicss. Every time your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball doesn't crit, it gain a stacking 10% increased chance to crit. This effect lasts until your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball finally crits and acts as a kind of bad luck protection. It is important to note that you can track this buff to know when you next http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball will be a guaranteed crit which gives you more preparation time when considering your next spell.

Actives

The first active spell is called http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast which is instant cast, has no travel time, is off the GCD AND can be cast while another spell is casting stacking up to 2 times, 3 with the talent http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on. This is what makes fire mage unique among it's spell caster counterparts and also what makes the play style very fast paced putting heavy emphasis on reaction times, decision making and future planning.

The 2nd spell in the arsenal is our artifact ability, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames which is instant cast and always critically strikes however, unlike http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast, does have travel time, is on the GCD and cannot be cast during another cast. It also stacks up to 3 times however has a much longer recharge rate at 45 seconds. The golden trait http://www.wowhead.com/spell=215773/phoenix-reborn has a random chance per http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite tick to reduce the cooldown by 10 seconds.

The most important part of fire mage is understanding and mastering the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak Mechanic which comes in 2 parts:

Getting two direct-damage critical strikes in a row will make your next http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike spell instant cast, and cause double the normal http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite damage.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up appears as a buff when you score 1 critical hit on your target. If you score another critical hit within 10 seconds (directly after the first), this buff turns into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak which lasts for 15 seconds. We then use this buff to fire off 1 of 2 hard hitting finisher abilities. However, if you do not score 2 critical hits in a row, you lose the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up buff and have to restart the process.

There are 6 builder spells which contribute to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation:
And only 2 finisher spells which can be used to spend your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak:
So, the question is:

“What is the best way to combine our 6 builder spells to generate and spend our 2 finishers?”

Let’s have a look.

Basic Rotations

Fireball rotation

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball is your base ability and will be the keybind you press most often. It has a 2.25second cast time before haste, hits rather weak and fills up all the downtime between all your other cool abilities. The most basic and fundamental rotation consists of

"But what about all this time spent waiting for fireball to hit the target and give me a heating up proc?"

Instead of waiting, we are going to continue casting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and then http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast as soon as we get a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up proc, to then launch the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast at the same time as the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball finishes casting.

This is what’s called the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast chaining mechanic.

Since both spells hit the boss at roughly the same time, it is possible, if they both crit, to reactivate http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak instantly without the need to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast, simply casting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast over and over. While we cannot get enough crit rating to reliably game this mechanic, you can test it if you get a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak proc and then pop http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast repeatable until pop http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion runs out.
(note. Not something you would do in an actual scenario, purely for testing).

"What happens if the first spell crits and the second one does not even though they hit the boss at the same time? Will I gain heating up and then instantly lose it?"

No. Blizzard added an undocumented mechanic which essentially saves your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up proc from disappearing if the two spells hit within a very short time frame of each other (roughly 0.2sec). When this happens, you should cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast during your current http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball cast to resume the chain.

Nighthold 2set alteration

Due to the Nighthold 2 set bonus giving http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157642/enh ... rotechnics 30% increased crit chance for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball to crit up from 10%, it is much easier to predict when your next http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball with be a guaranteed crit. If you have at least 40% crit chance, the maximum number of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball s you will cast in a row is 3 with the last one always critting. With this knowledge, we are able to cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast before the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball has even reach the target meaning the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast grants us http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up with the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball proccing http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak (backwards). The only gameplay benefit to this is we get fireblast’s cooldown rolling a bit faster but the real strength comes from turning an element of rng into something we can control and prepare for, something very undervalued. The reduction in rng and an extra second or 2 of future planning time is what makes the 2piece t19 very strong and in general makes the rotation much more fluid and more importantly controlled. The less rng the better.
One very important thing to is to never cancel your current cast to get your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast out sooner. This is a straight up dps loss and also breaks the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast chaining rhythm. The only exceptions would be if you have to move or a target is going to die before your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball reaches it.

Scorch Rotation

The same rotation can be used by replacing http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch can be cast while moving but does very little damage and has no bad luck protection like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball does in http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157642/enh ... rotechnics. If you are using koralons burning touch and the boss is 30% or below, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch replaces http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball in the standard rotation. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch however hits the boss near instantly so while it is technically possible to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast chain, it is much harder and less reliably to achieve since it is too dependent on how fast you can queue your abilities and your ping to the server etc. Therefore, casting a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast rotation is preferred while filling in http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast whenever possible.

Flamestrike Rotation

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike is our aoe finisher which uses a targeting reticle to aim the ability. The http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike rotation cannot benefit from a 2 spell chaining combo because http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike doesn’t contribute to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation. This means once you have a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak proc and you are already casting your next http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch, you can only generate a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up proc and not the full on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak. This leads to unavoidable http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up munching which is usually offset with the use of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames which we will cover later on.

TL:DR
Combustion Rotations

Before we start looking into the various http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotations, let’s first understand the theory behind http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion increases our crit chance by 100% and grants mastery equal to 50% of our critical strike stat. If we have 10000 crit rating, 5000 of that will be added to our mastery rating.
The main goal of every http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is to fit as many hard-hitting abilities into the 10 sec (14 sec with pre-ignition trait) window as possible. Since http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast is our overall hardest hitting ability, we want to proc http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak as many times as we can. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast are instant cast and both contribute to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation making it essentially to save up as many stacks as possible going into each http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. Weaving these spells together alongside http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast -> http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast chaining guarantees the maximum number of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast per http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. If you are to run out of instant cast spells, casting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball has been proven to be a dps gain over http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch provided you do not lose a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak proc over the duration. It is relatively hard timing to judge so think of it more like "I've used up all my instant casts and have 3-4 seconds left on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion. Can I fit in 2 http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast if I use scorch? If not, i'll use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball + http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast. Losing a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak is the biggest dps loss.

ST Build + Rune

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter is picked on mainly Single Target fights or fights where adds are of little importance. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast both gain 100% crit chance while the target is above 90% health making it a waste to use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion since that also gives us 100% crit chance. Instead, we delay http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion until after 90% giving us a mini http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion before our actually one. A really great thing about this opener is that the http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king have a high chance to proc due to the amount of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation we can achieve during the first 10% of the boss fight. We can then open the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation with a hard cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast to generate very large http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power should be used once on the opener and then once as the boss drops below 90% hp. You should follow up with an instant combustion into the instant cast rotation. The only exception is when you have a http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king proc: dropping your rune, hardcasting the Pyro and then combusting is more dps increase even though it may feel like you waste a lot of rune uptime (the pyro damage makes up for it).

There are multiple ways you can open with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter depending on how long the boss stays above 90%. You still want to have as many instant casts available during your first http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion as possible but also not be sat on max stacks for extensive periods of time since it’s a waste to not have them recharging during that time. This also applies to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor but only to the extent where you would gain 1 extra http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor charge in the entire fight.

The rules of the Firestarter opener are: Image

ST Build + Mirrors

The MI build plays the same as the RoP but replacing the spells. It is no longer played since the introduction of DPS proc trinkets such as http://www.wowhead.com/item=147016/terr ... =3561:1482 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =3561:1482 since the other 2 options on the tier directly affect the damage these trinkets do as well while http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image does not.

Mainly ST with some adds

The next 2 builds use the talent http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is used when there are enough adds in the encounter for flare up to make a significant impact. Surprisingly, the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration dot itself does very little damage while flare up does exponentially more damage the more mobs there are to AoE (similar to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb). Let’s first look at a ST http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration build followed by an AoE one.

When not using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter, you can open with the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation as soon as the fight starts. The main difference is you want to specifically cast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor and then http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image while combusting before the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor graphic appears on screen. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor snapshots to when the graphic appears in the sky and not when it lands on the ground (Explain what snapshot means in text here). This means you lose a few 10ths of a second in http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion but guarantee that your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor will 100% crit. Some people prefer to use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor later into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion to guarantee 5 stacks of pyretic incantation but I personally prefer the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor before http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion method since it allows us to fit in 1 more http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast. Chronomatic anomaly is a good example of when you could use this build.

Here are the 2 openers, the first when your precast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball crit and the 2nd when it did not.

Image

Variety build

This build emphasizes the cleave from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm with the added 40% damage of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power and is the go to m+ build. Typically, this build is taken when there are a lot of burst AoE opportunities as is usually accompanied by either http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch. It also provides quite competitive ST which makes it a much more versatile build than the others.

There are multiple ways to use your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak depending on the type of encounter you are up against. ST, Priority target and AoE.

ST and Priority Target rotation are actually exactly the same. The idea of priority target is to kill one target as fast as possible while still applying damage to the other mobs around it. This means that http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak procs are used for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast and the main source of AoE damage comes from building a large http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite on one target and spreading it to all other targets in the area. An example of when you would want to do a rotation like this is on the packs in Halls of Valor which contain a thundercaller and 1 – 2 other mobs. The thundercallers need to die very quickly as their lightning strikes on random party members combined with their aoe stuns can very easily overwhelm the group. The other mobs are less important but still need to be aoe’d down at a reasonable rate to keep on track with the timer. The new talent strafing run also passively aids in aoe’ing without taking focus off of the priority target.

Again, here are the 2 openers, the first when your precast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=133/fireball crits and the 2nd when it does not.

Image
Image

The pure aoe rotation focuses more on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/liv ... lame-patch and using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike instead of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast. This build focuses more on the raw throughput of these spells and less on spreading big http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite. You may use this rotation when it doesn’t really matter which mob dies first or the mobs do not last long enough for http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite to tick enough times (scorpyron is a great example of this).
Since http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike doesn’t contribute to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation, the rotation utilizes http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch to gain http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak and is therefore slower than a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast rotation.
Here is how you would go about the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike rotation:

Image

Mobility Build

A newer and more controversial build relative to the others, the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling build focuses on trading burst damage for more sustained, smoother damage output through-out an entire fight. It provides great aoe potentially while not suffering from any of the downsides of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power (being locked to a specific spot and only lasting 10 seconds) and synergizes well with the http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth pulling http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cooldown down to roughly 1minute, half of its normal cd.

The build shines when there is a good mix of intermittent aoe, priority target and ST combined or when you can line up http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion with a specific timing throughout the course of a fight. A good place to use this build would be in Mythic Gul’dan which combines all the above points into one fight. There are multiple types of adds to deal with including burst aoe and priority target while also focusing on the boss itself (ST). You also need to move around a lot so may find http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power too restrictive.

However, there are multiple issues with this build:

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling + http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth however are excellent in super high fortified m+ where the mobs last long enough to combust the start of almost every pack. Combining the priority target nature of super high keys with the burst potential of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power and huge http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12654/ignite during http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion makes this an excellent and engaging build to play.
Taking http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling means trading 2 active spells for 2 passives. This makes the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion rotation the most basic one out of them all only using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch.

Image

Burst AoE

Helm + http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury are only used in multi target encounters or when there is a huge amount of adds which require bursting very quickly (the majority of m+ and Krosus for example). Taking http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury means you lose 1 charge of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast and the cooldown of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast is 8 seconds up from 6 (before haste). Since http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury makes http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath contribute to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak generation, consider Helm an extension of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194466/phoenixs-flames as they are used in exactly the same way. Aim to use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath on CD.

Conclusion

That concludes this video on the fire mage rotations and hopefully informed you more about why certain builds are used in every situation. I will talk more about the pros and cons of certain talents in separate video for both raiding and m+ to avoid making this one even longer. Was the content presented well? Easily understandable? Your role as a Fire Mage

Intro
Mythic+ Dungeons are WoW's small group content which combines speed, precision, awareness and prowess for a fast and funtm experience. With an infinite scaling system, there is literally something for everyone whether you collect mounts of world first raid content.

This guide is aimed directly at how to play Fire mage in 5 man content. Your priorities are vastly different than raiding however the playstyle/rotations are all the same. Therefore, I will presume you have read the above guide on rotations and have a basic understanding of how the spec works overall.

You may be thinking, "Gee, this looks awfully like Herux's m+ guide, you are a copy cat bad man, make your own content!!". That's because I copied the layout exactly for the sake of continuity and time save with one minor difference, it's based on the FIRE MAGE so is infinity better am I right? Team?

In all seriousness, a big thanks to Herux for not only giving me his m+ guide template, but for taking the time to share his knowledge of m+ from a frost perspective. Always great to see others getting involved in the community.

Why should I trust you?
You may wonder, who is this Ezekielyo guy after all? I was previously the highest ranking m+ mage in both 7.2 and 7.2.5 as FIRE and part of the rank 1 team getting a few world first high keys along the way.

Talents
There are multiple builds used in m+ based on the user preference and affixes in play. Unlike in raiding, almost every talent is viable which really speaks for how well blizz designed fire this time around. I will be focusing on what I think are the most powerful talents in terms of dps, utilty and general play-ability.

Tier 15: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac is very random when it procs leading to munching and general bad gameplay situations both of which we want to avoid as much as possible.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration is the only choice in this tier due to the other 2 simply not having much affect in any level of key. The aoe damage can quickly ramp up especially if you are pulling huge amounts of mobs and is generally very strong in AoE.

Even on very high http://www.wowhead.com/affix=9/tyrannical, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205026/firestarter doesn't provide enough damage to compensate from the loss of damage on trash throughout the whole run.

Tier 30: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer
Incredible mobility and utility. Castable while casting means dodging boss abilities is super easy while maintaining dps.

The other 2 options also completely suck. So there's that...

Tier 45: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power is the go to talent due to it's highest dps output. Since our spec is based on burst windows, rune gives us the biggest damage output in the shortest amount of time which is exactly what we want when killing packs of mobs. However, because it locks you to the radius of the spell, it is not uncommon for you to have to run out of it with any number of debuffs, essentially wasting the entire charge. It also requires impeccable dungeon knowledge to really get the most out of and losing uptime can really feel very detrimental. The spec also does very little damage during down times between http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion and can leave some packs feeling very sluggish.

Since the release of Antorus and the new trinkets http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151969/term ... =3610:1472 ,http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151962/prot ... =3610:1472 and the new T21 set, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1463/incanters-flow falls too far behind to consider worth tanking anymore.

Tier 60: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury offers insane aoe burst damage when paired with http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem for a trade off in less boss damage. However, due to the increasing necessity to interrupt in higher keys, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath isn't used on cooldown and instead saved to be used in the interrupt rotation. This devalues the power of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury and can very easily lead to munching the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up it also gives. Highly recommended for lower keys both http://www.wowhead.com/affix=9/tyrannical and http://www.wowhead.com/affix=10/fortified if you have http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem, otherwise stick to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on offers more http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48107/heating-up procs throughout the whole dungeon. This leads to more boss damage and more sustained aoe due to the cooldown of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=60871/fireblast being lower. I use this 100% of the time in high keys as it is common to sit on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath for a very long time. I still use http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem as the extra range is still very beneficial, even though it is not 100% guaranteed crit chance.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205033/controlled-burn is too random, similar to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205020/pyromaniac. Never used.

Tier 75: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed is the general go to for more kite potential and being a passive, requiring no additional thought. Use in 95% of cases.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost has some very niche uses. Any mob that jumps to you to do damage can be negated with a well timed ring. Think wolves in HoV, cats in DHT and cats in CoS. Incredibly useful in high keys, not really worth while in lower ones.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward could see some play on http://www.wowhead.com/affix=4/necrotic weeks to help your tank reset his stacks. Not really useful any other time.

Tier 90: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb does more damage the more mobs there are due to the spread mechanic. This makes it very strong in lower keys and dungeons with very large packs which die very quickly. Requires no management outside of picking the right target to get the maximum spreadage. Taken when Priority Target is needed most due to lack of flamestriking.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch provides the highest AoE dps output we can achieve however is limited by the mobs moving out of the patches. In certain builds, it also becomes worthwhile to swap fireball spam with hardcast flamestrike spamming. Yes, you read the right, hardcast flamestriking.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=157976/unstable-magic, like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=55342/mirror-image is a pure ST talent and is never used.

Tier 100: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm / http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling is my go to choice in this tier. Lower http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion cooldowns means more burst windows. Since m+ is all about bursting packs of mobs, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling combined with http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth can lead to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion being available almost every pack. Very strong and my go to choice.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm does the most aoe damage provided you can hit the cinders. The curved nature of the skillshot and the fact that it can pull mobs which are out of combat make it very hard and frustrating to use. Not advisable unless you are very good at using it or simply want your team to rage at you a lot.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor is a solid choice as it adds more boss damage. Can be used if your team lacks ST damage or you can't get decent timings with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling. Combined with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch can leave very powerful dots ticking on the floor. Pray your tanks not got twitchy wasd fingers!

Builds
There are 2 main builds I consider using every time I am flying to a dungeon.

The Tactical Nuke Build
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling

This build focuses on bursting into one Priority target via spending http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak procs on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast and spreading huge http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite to all targets in the area. Combined with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb, the build excels at the mixture of both ST and Aoe (PT). An example of where this build shines is when you encounter http://www.wowhead.com/npc=95842/valarjar-thundercaller in Halls of Valor. These mobs have to be bursted very quickly due to their http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198595/thunderous-bolt ability targeting a random party member for veyr high amounts of damage. The aim of the game is to kill them as fast as possible before you run out of interupts and you are overwelmed by the damage.

The Carpet Bombing Build
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205023/conflagration, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236058/frenetic-speed, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling

The highest potential dps focusing on consistant, mass aoe spending all http://www.wowhead.com/spell=48108/hot-streak procs on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike to generate as many http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch as possible. Since your damage is spread amoung all targets you hit with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, this is a very even dps build and excels at killing everything at the same time. However, it requires mobs to remain inside the flamepatch for any of the damage to apply. Mobs suchs as http://www.wowhead.com/npc=91008/rockbound-pelter have learnt that standing in fire is bad gameplay and end up backflipping out of the pack therefore ignoring all of your built up flamepatch damage. Communication with your tank is also key to make sure they are not constantly moving the mobs out of your damage.

Read here to understand when to take http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235870/alexstraszas-fury vs http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205029/flame-on.

"But I don't care about all these words and shit, do I use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb?"
Use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch so you can top the total damage done meter. Go get 'em champ.

Gearing
Stat Priority

SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF SIM YOURSELF

Using the right set of gear for each specific situation is key to maximizing your output throughout the whole dungeon. This makes gear swapping an integral part of every m+ dungeon you run and is necessary if you want to be as effective as possible. Regardless of which build you run, there are 2 things you will be killing in any given dungeon:
  • Bosses
  • Trash
Bosses
Most bosses are ST and thus very similar to raids. Please see the Basic Guide for updated ST stat weights

Consider using 1 target, 2min settings when simming for dungeon bosses.

Trash
The Tactical Nuke Build focuses on http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite to spread the damage around to other targets. Therefore, Mastery is the highest priority stat when aoeing in this build. Here are my current stats and stat weights:

Image
Image
Consider using 4 target, 1min settings when simming for trash.

The Carpet Bombing Build focuses on Haste as it's primary stat to pump out as many http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch s as possible via faster GCD's and fast hardcast http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike s. Yes, you read that correct, hardcasting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike on 4+ targets is a dps gain. Again, my stats in my http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch gear and approriate stat weights:

Legendaries
ST Legendaries
The best ST setup for bosses currently is http://www.wowhead.com/item=132406/marq ... e-sun-king + http://www.wowhead.com/item=132454/kora ... ning-touch.

There are specific bosses where you may want to use http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth in place of http://www.wowhead.com/item=132454/kora ... ning-touch to push combustion timings (Ularogg Cragshaper in Neltharion's Lair) but they are few and far between.

Another legendary you will swap to frequently is http://www.wowhead.com/item=132410/shard-of-the-exodar, allowing you to lust while the rest of the group has the http://www.wowhead.com/spell=57724/sated debuff. Combined with http://www.wowhead.com/item=120257/drums-of-fury, you can lust possible 2 - 3 times more than the rest of your group. It is generally always prefer to wear http://www.wowhead.com/item=132410/shard-of-the-exodar whenever you want to lust a boss twice or if you want to lust a considerably harder pack after a boss. Consider your lust timings every time you start a dungeon.

AoE Legendaries
My personal favourite setup is http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem + http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth. The extra range http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem provides http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath is a great QoL change along side the great damage potential while http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth synergizes well with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling for very low cooldown http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion (roughly 1min).

http://www.wowhead.com/item=144259/kilj ... rning-wish does a lot of AoE damage if you are pulling big packs and can be combined with http://www.wowhead.com/item=140800/phar ... =3514:1472 for incredible burst damage.

http://www.wowhead.com/item=132452/sephuzs-secret can be combined with http://www.wowhead.com/item=132863/darc ... ire-diadem to bring some unexpected amounts of burst with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=116011/rune-of-power. Big trash pulls where you http://www.wowhead.com/spell=80353/time-warp means you have enough haste to fit in 3 http://www.wowhead.com/spell=176670/living-bomb s during 1 http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion provided you proc http://www.wowhead.com/item=132452/sephuzs-secret with a http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath before hand. Think, first pull in Maw of Souls, give it a go next time ;)

http://www.wowhead.com/item=132454/kora ... ning-touch is also an option on trash especially during http://www.wowhead.com/affix=10/fortified and when using http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch. The sheer amount of patchs you can keep rolling is a lot of damage.

Defensive Legendaries
If you're not going to be pushing keys past a 15 don't worry about this section.
The best defensive legendary you could possibly use is http://www.wowhead.com/item=132444/pryd ... agnum-opus. Paired with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier I have roughly 1.7mil absorb shield which is enough to survive almost all targetted mechanics.

http://www.wowhead.com/item=133977/belovirs-final-stand is just as strong giving me a 1.2mil shield every blink. Although in most situations where a defensive legendary is needed, http://www.wowhead.com/item=132444/pryd ... agnum-opus is a better option due to being passive and not taking up a tier slot.

The mega combination of http://www.wowhead.com/item=132444/pryd ... agnum-opus + http://www.wowhead.com/item=133977/belovirs-final-stand + http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier gives me almost 8mil effective hp making us one of the only classes which can deal with incredibly high Tyrannical keys.

Trinkets
ST Trinkets
Similar to raiding, the ST trinkets do not change. One important thing to note is, it takes 30 seconds for on use trinkets to become usable when swapping to them. This means you need to put http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =3562:1497 (and any other active trinkets you have) on the pack before the boss. In order from top to bottom:

http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=154177/norgannons-prowess
http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151955/acri ... =3610:1472
http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =3562:1497
http://www.wowhead.com/item=147016/terr ... =3562:1497
http://www.wowhead.com/item=140809/whis ... =3517:1492
http://www.wowhead.com/item=141482/unst ... =3466:1472
http://www.wowhead.com/item=140792/erra ... =3444:1482
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142166/ethereal-urn&bonus=0
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142507/brin ... =3508:1512 (non crit versions)

AoE Trinkets
AoE trinkets differ depending on the type of aoe you are doing . Trinkets like http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151962/prot ... =3610:1472, http://www.wowhead.com/item=147018/spec ... =3562:1497 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=140801/fury ... =3516:1487 are excellent at consistent AoE damage while others like http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151969/term ... =3610:1472, http://www.wowhead.com/item=140800/phar ... =3516:1487 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=144259/kilj ... rning-wish are excellent AoE burst trinkets. Again, in order from top to bottom:

http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151969/term ... =3610:1472
http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=151962/prot ... =3610:1472
http://www.wowhead.com/item=140801/fury ... =3516:1487
http://www.wowhead.com/item=147018/spec ... =3562:1497
http://www.wowhead.com/item=144259/kilj ... rning-wish
http://www.wowhead.com/item=140800/phar ... =3516:1487
http://www.wowhead.com/item=141482/unst ... =3466:1472
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142157/aran ... =1826:1437
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142166/ethereal-urn&bonus=0
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142507/brin ... =3508:1512 (Mastery version)

Relics
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194239/pyr ... c-paranoia
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=210182/blue-flame-special
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194224/fire-at-will
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194313/great-balls-of-fire
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194234/rei ... -overdrive

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194314/eve ... onsumption and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194312/burning-gaze are the best relics since they affect both ST and AoE while the rest specific only affect certain spells.

Racials
Racials in M+ make a huge difference compared to its counterpart. Apart from DPS gains with races like Troll http://www.wowhead.com/spell=26297/berserking or Dwarf http://www.wowhead.com/spell=59224/migh ... e-mountain, the utility certain races provide make up for certain aspects Frost lacks in. The top 3 racials to have in M+ in terms of racials are:
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=28730/arcane-torrent
An AoE interrupt and blanket silence. Incredibly strong at grouping caster mobs together and an additional interrupt in the rotation.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=59752/ever ... or-himself
A stun break can save yourself from an unfortunate death
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=58984/shadowmeld
Shadowmeld can completely negate an entire mechanic if timed well.
Dwarf's racial http://www.wowhead.com/spell=20594/stoneform can also clear certain dots and provides additional damage reduction. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=227742/garrote from http://www.wowhead.com/npc=114312/moroes#abilities is one example of how strong the racial can be.

Spells and CD Usage
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion
Unlike raiding, it is also important to track your cooldowns when you are not in combat. Knowing when and were to use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion is key to successfully completing those tighter timed runs. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion allows us to build very large http://www.wowhead.com/spell=12846/mastery-ignite on a target and then spread that damage to targets around the original nuke target. Not only does http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion give us 100% crit chance, it also gives us 50% of our critical strike stat as Mastery. Combined with a full set of mastery gear, that's close to 40% mastery! Because of the power built into http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion, we want to get as many as possible out during the entire dungeon and on the right targets. We have some ways of lowering the cooldown of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=190319/combustion in http://www.wowhead.com/spell=155148/kindling and http://www.wowhead.com/item=144355/pyro ... tion-cloth with the possibility of shaving off half of the original cooldown. In high keys this enables combustion in almost every single pack making it a very strong cooldown to deal with Priority Targets.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast vs http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrikedoes more damage on 4+ targets (2+ with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205037/flame-patch) than http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11366/pyroblast does. However, like I have detailed previously in this guide, it is important to know when to use either spell. Even in groups of 6 mobs, killing one mob much quicker than the others is highly desirable. Alternatively, there may be a group of really small mobs which should die very fast to stop http://www.wowhead.com/affix=4/necrotic applications on your tank. Learning which mobs are the dangerous ones comes with practice (and the level of the key) but a general rule of thumb is, if you can't kite it, kill it first!

Survival > DPS
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch are king in m+. You are far more likely to be targeted by mechanics in smaller group content and knowing when to move is the most important part of dpsing. Staying alive is your #1 focus as your death contributes to 1/5 of the entire group compared to raidings 1/20. Losing 1 second of dps while casting http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2948/scorch to survive the puddles on http://www.wowhead.com/npc=91808/serpentrix could very well save your life (and your healers sanity). Learning to take as little damage as possible while still doing the most dps is what really separates the best players from the rest. Doing top dps requires luck and class understanding, staying alive requires encounter knowledge, awareness, decision making and reaction time. Take time to learn the fights and then worry about doing the damage.

Potion Usage
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142117/poti ... nged-power usage is very important in higher keys. You want to aim for every pull to be exactly 1min to be able to constantly pre pull before every pack. While not always possible, a sweet trick is to pop http://www.wowhead.com/spell=66/invisibility to drop combat temporarily to start the cooldown ticking again.

Another thing most people forget, http://www.wowhead.com/item=142117/poti ... nged-power also adds an additional 200-300k HP on top of your max HP pool. Ever died to a mechanic by 10k overkill? Potion got your back!

It is sometimes worthwhile waiting the additional 10 seconds to be able to double pot in a fight then it is to rush through the dungeon. Like always, try to plan 1 - 2 mins ahead.

Utility Spells
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2139/counterspell is the most important spell in the entire game. The more times you use this in a dungeon, the better the player you are. Use it as close to on cooldown as possible. When playing in organised groups, make sure to coordinate your interrupts so as not to use them all one 1 ability and leave nothing for the rest.

As a mage we have A LOT of utility. We have http://www.wowhead.com/spell=219407/polymorph, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=122/frost-nova (two with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=205036/ice-ward), http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost, the slow from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike, and a ranged aoe disorientate/interrupt http://www.wowhead.com/spell=78521/dragons-breath. Now you might ask, "what's the point of Utility?" Well when the key level gets higher and higher you can't always pull an entire mob pack and burn through it. Sometimes you have to CC certain mobs to avoid the risk of wiping. This is where spells like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=219407/polymorph and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost come in handy.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=212653/shimmer healing via http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194318/cauterizing-blink is very underrated. Being able to heal up to 20% of you maximum HP every 15 seconds is a cooldown in itself making your life and your healers life much easier. Standing next to walls and blinking into them to effectively go nowhere is a great way to maximize the uptime of http://www.wowhead.com/spell=194318/cauterizing-blink without detrimental effects on your dps. The relieved pressure from your healer can also allow them to dps longer, increasing the speed of the dungeon overall.

Specifically, correct http://www.wowhead.com/spell=219407/polymorph usage is crucial for high m+. CC'ing a mob completely out of combat until ready to be killed is highly valuable. Certain mobs such as http://www.wowhead.com/npc=95842/valarjar-thundercaller with their http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198595/thunderous-bolt and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198599 can easily wipe a group on a high level http://www.wowhead.com/affix=10/fortified key.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=113724/ring-of-frost is also very useful in high m+. Mobs such as http://www.wowhead.com/npc=98691/risen-scout#abilities with their http://www.wowhead.com/spell=200291 can do millions of damage onto an entire group if not stunned, disorientated, gripped or incapacitated. It is also a tricky spell to get used to, it's not an instant CC like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=31661/dragons-breath or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=119381/leg-sweep.

Defensive Spells
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier is the Fire mage personal absorb shield. The weakest of the 3 specs but granting us increased physical damage reduction when it is active. Since the recent patch which gave each spec their own personal shield, http://www.wowhead.com/spell=235313/blazing-barrier is a combination of our old http://www.wowhead.com/spell=35915/molten-armor (in one of it's past variations) and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=11426/ice-barrier. To compensate for the damage reduction, the total absorb amount is reduced. While designed more towards pvp, it can still save you in many situations. Make sure to keep this spell on a good keybind as you should be using it whenever there is any down time or a big targeted boss ability is coming your way.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block is one of the best defensive spells in the game. It ignores ALL damage (unless specifically coded to go through immunities) and is one of the most powerful aspects of mage as a whole enabling us to survive bosses which other classes simply die to.

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=86949/cauterize provides us a 2nd chance at life. While it is not clear at first which abilties you are able to proc http://www.wowhead.com/spell=86949/cauterize on, it can still be used as a pseudo defensive cooldown. It's a very good idea to tell your healer when you are about to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=86949/cauterize since you will require a lot of healing once it procs.

Tips and Tricks
Here are some tips and tricks that can either improve QoL or even provide big DPS increases that you might not have known about.

Spellsteal
The biggest tip I can give you in M+ is keybind http://www.wowhead.com/spell=30449/spellsteal it is in my opinion one of the most useful aspects of being a mage in M+. There is a huge range of mob abilities that can be spellstolen as well as purged, here's some of the most notable: The best way to keep an eye out for these buffs is to either download an addon that displays the spellstealable buffs clearly or through Elvui, which gives an option to highlight spellstealable buffs with a yellow border. There may be other ways to track it that I'm not aware of but I personally go about it through Elvui.

Shimmer and Block Negation
Apart from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=30449/spellsteal there are plenty of innovative and cool ways to use our spell kit to either mitigate or negate entire mechanics. Spells like http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer and http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer can be used to: http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block can be used to either clear harmful debuffs or immune a plethora of boss mechanics: If you haven't noticed yet mechanics that can be avoided by http://www.wowhead.com/spell=236645/shimmer tend to be mechanics that include a travel time. While mechanics that can be avoided with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=45438/ice-block tend to be big one-shot mechanics that can either target you or another player.

Gear Swapping
Gear swapping is a HUGE part of optimizing M+ performance. Building multiple gear sets should be part of every m+ players repertoire.

There's two ways to get comfortable with gear swapping. One, is to use the in game gear manager then binding the gear set to a key or clicking the set on a bar while the second uses a specific addon called Opie. The addon page can explain it in full, but it basically uses one keybind to give you a radial dial which you can add multiple buttons to and using a mouse hover to select the one you want.

-link https://mods.curse.com/addons/wow/opie

One thing to note when it comes to gear swapping is that on-use trinkets will go on a 30 sec CD timer even if it is already "off CD". So if you're using something like http://www.wowhead.com/item=147012/umbr ... =3562:1497 or http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =3562:1497 make sure you give yourself enough time before its use.
-hot tip:use http://www.wowhead.com/spell=66/invisibility to gear swap even in combat!

Weakauras
Weakauras is an addon which lets you customise almost everything. It is the single most powerful addon ever created. We will be using it primarily to display cooldowns, track usables and monitor important information. There is even an entire forum dedicated to sharing weakauras and even a discord channel with incredibly helpful people giving advice on the tiny specifics or custom coding.

The 2 most important weakauras for every class in m+ are:
Group Utility Tracker
Interrupt Tracker

Tracking the groups cooldowns is integral to good communication and coordination. Learn to look at them frequently.

No excuse to not use Weakauras. If you can do something similar in TellMeWhen then more power to you, otherwise, USE WEAKAURAS.

Addons
DBM - Boss timings exactly like in raids.
Details! - Good for working out why you died and how you could improve your play, not just your insanely huge dps.
GTFO - Makes the most horrible noise if you are standing in fire
Select - Cool way to combine a lot of icons into one button

Consumables and Miscellaneous Items
With every dungeon you should be prepared to come in with at least:
http://www.wowhead.com/item=127847/flas ... pered-pact
http://www.wowhead.com/item=133573/seed ... fish-plate or food of choice, also keep in mind utility foods such as http://www.wowhead.com/item=133577/fighter-chow.
http://www.wowhead.com/item=140587/defiled-augment-rune
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142117/poti ... nged-power
http://www.wowhead.com/item=120257/drums-of-fury in case your group doesn't have a 2nd http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2825/bloodlust.
http://www.wowhead.com/item=127834/anci ... ing-potion
http://www.wowhead.com/item=116268/drae ... ity-potion if your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=66/invisibility is on cd.

Engineering
Engineering deserves it's only header purely because it is by far the best profession. http://www.wowhead.com/spell=54793/frag-belt and http://www.wowhead.com/item=40771/cobalt-frag-bomb are ranged, AoE interrupts which do not share a cooldown with each other. That's right, each player can potentially have an additional 2 aoe interrupts. THAT'S INSANE! If you are super serious about m+, everyone in your team should be an engineer, no questions asked.

Your role as a Fire Mage?
We are the gods of mass AoE damage while being pretty lame at cleave and ST (although http://www.wowhead.com/item=147017/tarn ... =1497:3561 actually makes our ST not completely terrible). We bring permanent AoE slows via http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike and aoe roots from http://www.wowhead.com/spell=122/frost-nova. We work extremely well with DK's as their mass grip is an enabler for our aoe http://www.wowhead.com/spell=2120/flamestrike spammage.

Unfortunately, we lack any powerful utility (stuns/battle resses/push backs). Since http://www.wowhead.com/item=120257/drums-of-fury makes every class be able to http://www.wowhead.com/spell=80353/time-warp, we are somewhat mediocre in the current m+ meta. We may see far more play if profession items were removed which maybe the case in the upcoming m+ tournament. It would be more likely that teams will take Elemental Shamans however since their http://www.wowhead.com/spell=192058/lig ... urge-totem is better than all of our utility combined.

M+ is all about strategy and decision making. If you find that http://www.wowhead.com/spell=153561/meteor or http://www.wowhead.com/spell=198929/cinderstorm work for you instead then that's perfectly acceptable. Take the time to find what works best for you and your group.

http://www.wowhead.com/item=140801/fury ... bonus=3514" target="_blank, http://www.wowhead.com/item=140800/phar ... bonus=3514" target="_blank,
http://www.wowhead.com/item=142157/aran ... bonus=1826" target="_blank are all really solid m+ trinkets as good as the legendary one (without the stats ofc).

It depends on the level of the key you are doing. KJ + Pharameres + Helm would be sick on a low key where you pull 10 packs at once while Helm + Belt is my personal favourite in high keys because of the mobility it provides + the amount of flamestrikes you can get out.

If I'm not mistaken, the three best trinkets at the opening are owl / terror / witd, but as for min maxing of ilvls ... we're gonna need the people that do the nice graphs to work on that

It's the best pre-ToS trinket aside from arcano so yes, you are good to keep using it for the time being.

I can't remember exactly but maths wise Flamestrike on 4+ and with flame patch, 2+. I don't really see m+ as "how can I do the most overall dps" but more "what is the best use of this gcd".

I use RoP + Kindling on everything now with Helm + belt for trash and bracers + belt for bosses. I only switch to gloves when I can get combustions off on practically every pack (which is roughly 25+). I run crit mastery gear for trash and my normal haste/vers + crit gear for bosses similar to raids.

If you get any of these relics at 5ilvls or higher, then you can replace your current relics and see a dps gain.
5 item levels as in 900 -> 905?

Weapon ilvls. All the relic sims with the +X number next to them are meaning weapon ilvls that the relic gives. That's why you can have +1,2,3, etc.

Yo Eze. Amazing job as always.
The only thing i feel is missing is the new Fire shoulders isn't on the list of legendaries for ST/AoE and it would be nice with some trinket sims for ToS.
Keep up the good work <3
