Low Single Target Frost DPS

Hello guys,

I have been underperforming in my frost mage for bosses like Taloc or Fetid Devourer and I can't seem to find why. I am 970 ilvl and I am pulling around 9-10k when Raidbots says I should be doing around 14-15k. I am simming according to Raidbots, I have the right traits, the right gear, and I am following the dps guides. So I think it has to be a rotation problem but I am using my rotcrusted voodoo doll on CD, using Comet Storm on CD, shattering GS with BF proc, you get the idea. On AOE fights like Vectis I swap to Splitting Ice and I do around 14k dps, so I know my rotation is alright but for Single Target it's pathetic. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Side note: I seem to do more dps with Ghunn trinket than with Rotcrusted Voodoo Doll being casted on CD even though Voodoo Doll is the best trinket for Frost Mages, any ideas?

Perhaps if you would link logs or something, that would be helpful. Also, you can try sticking your logs into wowanalyzer!

Your logs show that you did NOTHING for 75% of the fight. That might be a good reason...

I'm having a similar issue so I figured I would just post here instead of creating a new thread.

My dps is ok i guess but I'm worried that I'm underperforming for my ilvl.

Even when I parse purple for damage, my ilvl rank is constantly half of what my damage rank is. If I parse 80 overall my ilvl rank is 40. This has been consistent across many fights, and all specs despite my every effort to improve it (well except for fire... I'm still fucking up the combustion rotation so I'm working on that). Focusing in frost tho: I'm keeping my downtime low, maximizing cooldowns, shattering and spiking properly, I sim my gear constantly and have played through the logs of top ranked frost mages looking for differences to account for my weak dps but don't see anything obvious.

My wow analyzer is also not giving me any recommendations to address such a big and consistent gap. Any idea about what in doing weong?

From looking at your logs briefly I saw that on your most recent Taloc kill your ice lances were doing the majority of your damage. On a single target fight like that Glacial spike should be your primary damage at about 33%. You are going to want to use it as soon as you get a brain freeze proc every time. Just guessing but it seems like you didn't use GP at all while on the elevator which is a big mistake. The reason why people do big damage on Taloc is because they don't hold their abilities on the adds. Sure, it's not pertinent that they die but your just holding yourself back. For example, when I play arcane on that fight (100%) of the time I will use my Arcane Power on one of the adds because it comes off CD and I'll get another Arcane Power once were done with the elevator phase anyway. Obviously you won't have that opportunity with Icy Veins being a 3 min CD but hopefully you get the point I'm trying to get across.

Hope it helps!

Was just checking up on spec changes when I saw this old post. After a bunch of digging I finally figured out what was holding me back. My glacial spikes weren't critting because there is a 10-15(?)ish deadzone where if you are too close to the mob, flurry won't apply Winters chill before the glacial spike lands. That's why my GS damage was so low and why my ranking was tanking, I was basically leaving almost half of my GS damage on the table.
